Google Translations

As you probably know, Google's Translate Page is able to perform a rough machine translation of web documents and other text. For those who are really bored, this can be a minor form of amusement. For example...

Original English Text:

When you write copy you have the right to copyright the copy you write, if the copy is right. If however, your copy falls over, you must right your copy. If you write religious services you write rite, and have the right to copyright the rite you write. Very conservative people write right copy, and have the right to copyright the right copy they write. A right wing cleric would write right rite, and has the right to copyright the right rite he has the right to write. His editor has the job of making the right rite copy right before the copyright can be right.

Example: Should Jim Wright decide to write right rite, then Wright would write right rite, which Wright has the right to copyright. Duplicating that rite would copy Wright right rite, and violate copyright, which Wright would have the right to right.

German Translation, Translated to English:

If you write copy, which you have the right to the copyright the copy, you write, if the copy is quite. If however, your copy falls more rueber, you must correct your copy. If you write, write pious services you rite and have the right to the copyright the rite, which you write. Very conservative people write right copy and have the right to the copyright the right copy, which they write. A right Fluegelkleriker would write right rite and the right to the copyright the right rite has, it the right has to write. Its publisher has the job of forming the right ritekopienrechtes, before the copyright can be quite.

Example: If Jim WRIGHT decides to write right rite then WRIGHT would write right rite, to the WRIGHT the right to the copyright has. Copying this rite was hurt right rite WRIGHT to copy and copyright, which WRIGHT would have the right right.

This, by the way, is exactly the same result that you would get using AltaVista's Babelfish translation page. They both use SYSTRAN technology.

Microsoft vs the U.S.

Microsoft wins. Life as we know it will continue uninterrupted. Get back to work.

Frankly, I haven't followed this case closely enough to have any meaningful opinions. But if you'd like to read the opinions of somehow who has, check out Scott Rosenberg's article at Salon. He sums it up nicely:

Ultimately, it's about whether one company should or will have the power to dominate, control and suffocate any technology market it enters. Yesterday and today, Microsoft has had that power. The court's decision means the company will have it tomorrow, too. If that's in the public interest, then I guess Microsoft 'R' Us.
