CSS and IE -- Another Example

Last week I noted how Internet Explorer seems to have some problems with the new CSS-based design at wired.com.

Another example can be found at Jeffrey Zeldman's site, which now uses CSS for layout. Using IE, it's damn near impossible to select text on the page.

Britney Spears... How Do I Spell Thee?

Google lists nearly 600 misspelled variations of this popular media creation's name. But Britney may not be as dumb as she appears.

Speaking of spelling, I find that I use Google more and more as a quick spell checker. If I'm unsure of the spelling of a word or name, I enter it as a search term. If I guessed incorrectly, Google displays the correct spelling of the word.

Correction - The Digital Camera Era

In the Costa Rica Travelogue entry below, I stated that 1994 was in the pre-digital camera era. Wrong!

I got my first digital camera in 1991. It was a Logitech PhotoMan. It stored 32 B&W TIF images (376 x 240 pixels), and cost about $1,000. I wrote a brief review of this item for InfoWorld (Logitech's PhotoMan comes to the rescue of PC-using photo buffs, January 6, 1992).

Normally, reviewers must return hardware to the manufacturer when the review is completed. But, for some reason, they never asked me to return this camera. I still have it, tucked away in the garage. I should dig it out and see if it still works.

Make Your Own Personalized License Plates

Step right up, folks. Now you no longer have to go to prison in order to make license plates. The Acme License Maker is a free service. Choose your state, enter your text, and click a button. In a few seconds, your JPG graphic will be ready to go.

The Acme site also lets you create labels, similar to those produced in Seinfeld Episode 98. And, when Hallmark Day (uh, I mean Valentines Day) arrives, you can create customized heart candy images.

Weird Resume?

I'm not sure what this is. It's kind of like a resume, but how many resumes start out like this?

Former child prodigy in many fields. More high abilities in more different fields than anyone in last 50 years. IQ perhaps c 180. Based on amazing abilities suitable for international competition in and impact on and work in numerous fields from an early age, I should be rich and in Who's Who and the Social Register and have many known major credits...I have never known anyone as intelligent as I am.

One thing is perfectly clear, however: Web page design is certainly not a part of her skill set.

A Costa Rica Travelogue, Circa 1994

A few days ago I discovered a long-forgotten Word file tucked away on my hard drive. It's a lengthy description of my 1994 vacation to Costa Rica. I'm not sure how much of the information is still valid, but I've made it available. Those who are planning a first trip to this wonderful country might find a few helpful tips.

I took tons of photos on that trip, but 1994 was in the pre-digital camera era. Consequently, they are all in the form of prints -- and I don't have access to a scanner. So that monkey image was snagged from the Net. It may or may not be a bona fide Costa Rican monkey. Hell, it could even be an Anaheim rally monkey.
