Top-Selling Kindle Books
Interesting statistic: 44 of Top 50 Kindle Bestsellers are $0.
Fact is, a guy like me can buy a Kindle and get more than enough free books to keep him busy. First, there's the public domain. It's a huge collection of classics and obscure gems. Plus, Amazon has quite a few non-PD books, free for a limited time. When I see one that looks good, I "buy" it and it shows up on my Kindle.
I've had my Kindle 2 for about eight months. I use it every day (except on the rare occasions when I'm reading a physical book). During that time, I bought one Kindle book. And it was a dud.
Which leads to: Value perception of eBooks is going to zero.
When people see 44 of the top 50 ebooks free -
- They are reluctant to pay $10 for ebooks.
- They choose free first and read more free than paid books.
- The value perception of ebooks goes downhill.
They think authors who want $5 or more for an ebook are greedy.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
