The New Mules

I found a web site for an old time group, and it's easily the best musician's site I've ever seen: The New Mules.

We're a string band whose focus is mainly on the old-time music of the lower Midwest, particularly that from downstate Illinois. We've gathered up some mighty fine players from the area, and on August 2, 2008, we were honored with the blue ribbon in the traditional band competition at the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop, West Virginia.

What makes the site so good?

  • They have sound clips of every track on their CD.
  • They have a complete list (with photos) of the instruments they play on the CD.
  • They have complete lyrics for all vocal tracks.
  • They have a list of the tuning for each instrument, by track.
  • They an interactive map that shows the sources for the tunes.

I have only one complaint -- and a serious one. You can buy their CD at CD Baby, but they don't make MP3 downloads available.
