Unexpected Rainbow
(with comments)
We were eating dinner outside, and all of a sudden the wind kicked up from the north. Then it smelled like rain. Next thing you know, a rainbow appeared. It was actually a double rainbow for a while, but by the time I got the camera, it had reverted back to a normal rainbow.

Is that the same cactus that is flipping us off 5 posts ago? - By . Comment posted 29-Apr-2007 @06:48pm:Yes, that's the same flipping cactus. But it has two new arms growing now (not visible in the photo).

I think it is wonderful how, as you sit outside and eat dinner, a photo-op appears and you think of us.
:-) - By . Comment posted 29-Apr-2007 @07:05pm:ooooooo, purrrrrrdy...
- By . Comment posted 29-Apr-2007 @07:09pm:Actually, I was only thinking of you. I thought to myself... self, old wally the duck would probably like to see a Tucson rainbow tonight.

I promise I'll never get fleas or anything and you don't even have to scratch behind my ears or rub my belly. I'll even wear a collar and stay out on a chain in the yard if that's what it takes. Wouldn't it be worth your while just to watch me scarf down Purina?
- By robin. Comment posted 29-Apr-2007 @08:40pm:I know that rain smell - it's the same in New Mexico - the only thing I miss that much about the desert.

Dinner by a couple witnessed by a scene of Double-Rainbow.
I do have kind words when the situation necessitates.
Enjoy your dinner. Regards. - By Imagineer. Comment posted 29-Apr-2007 @10:14pm:Nice shot and a fine saguaro but could use a Gila woodpecker nest.
- By major_danny. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @02:20am:I love that rain smell.
It smells like slaked lime—Ca(OH)2—but maybe it has something to do with ions in the air.
One time I hiked to the top of Enchanted Rock (about 300 ft. high) and, looking west, I watched a cool front roll in from miles away. No rainbow, just a low brown dust fringe preceding a wall of rain. It had that rain smell. - By Snag. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @03:53am:Nice pic .. beautiful light. Thanks for sharing.
BTW, has anyone checked the house on the right for the 'pot of gold' ? - By Sheldon. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @06:22am:I think that cactus is giving you the finger.
- By Woody. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @06:46am:It's rare to see a rainbow from end-to-end because, in places with regular rain, there are too many trees. From an airplane, a rainbow appears as a full circle.
Remember, the rainbow is God's promise to mankind to never flood the Earth again. That might throw a wrench into Al Gore's claims. It doesn't look as if you're in any trouble of being flooded out. - By BobHop. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @07:43am:Right, Woody. In the northeast we are not in wide open spaces that often, so seeing a half circle is special. There is a trace of the second rainbow on the right side. The colors should be in the reverse order if it really is. I can't tell in the picture.
- By wormpicker. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @09:13am:That earthy smell in the desert is created primarily from filamentous bacteria in the soil called Actinomycetes. Some species of these bacteria are the source of many of our antibiotics. Apparently, desert floors are chock full of Actinomycetes.

- By Imagineer. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @09:51am:Another, come to think of it, was heading northeasterly up a winding canyon and valley sort of highway in southern BC and seeing about a dozen different rainbows in an hour or so.
- By wally the duck. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @03:07pm:... and did you watch C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate?
- By . Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @05:35pm:Beautiful! Wonderously, (is that a word?), beautiful!

No, Wally, that was another trip. So long, PK Dick... - By . Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @06:12pm:Most interesting rainbow I ever saw was in Exeter UK. My husband was birding from a boat with other people and it had rained or was somewhat misty around the town of Exmouth and this glorious rainbow appeared. What made it really wonderful was than when the boat moved, the rainbow appeared to move and all the seafront homes got to change color as we viewed them thru the rainbow. Even my pictures turned out pretty good, considering this was long before digital photos.
- By Ivan Peeler. Comment posted 30-Apr-2007 @08:40pm:There's need of an imagination to conjure up a rainbow in a full moon.
I mostly sleep throughout the dark hours after dusk (moon or no moon, even full moon is usually hidden above the clouds ; I'm down under).
Winds in the Tower Helald the Impending Storm ; Can you smell the forthcoming rain ?
Personal experience is that the ambient tells after rain ; the moist molecules would then be the carrier to diffuse all that aroma pounded up by the rain. How refreshing.
Come to think of it, rainbow in the desert (albeit semi-desert) could be a rather rare observation.
Regards.
