Teen Gets New Name
(with comments)

Weird auction news: Sheboygan Teen Gets New Name.

An unemployed Wisconsin teen spent the first 19 years of his life as Calvin Gosz, but after selling his naming rights you can now call him Verkkokauppa Com.

Gosz says he was running out of money so he went on eBay and offered to legally change his name for $5,000. The Finnish consumer electronics Web site took him up on it. The purchase was finalized Friday and the money sent via PayPal shortly after noon.

How much to change the name of Sheboygan?

I wonder how much the Sheboygen Chamber of Commerce could scrounge up for me to change my name to Sheboygen?

Provided I spell it properly, that is...

They could change it to Truth or Consequences, NM.

How a consumer electronics website in Finland thinks a boy named after it in USA will make any productive publicity for it is beyond me.

It's short-term publicity they're after. It's unlikely that Verkkokauppa will become a household word in the U.S.

But they got me to post their logo... And I'll bet their web site hits increase significantly for a while.

For $5,000 I bet Sheboygan, Michigan would have changed its name to Verkkokauppa.

A fan of my band named his first born son after my band.

That is pathetic and sad. Sounds like your fans are a real mature, educated, cultured bunch.

I understand that Verkkokauppa is actually a pretty common name in Sheboygan, so it's probably no big deal.

Verkkokauppa would not be an unusual name in northern Minnesota, either.

Dare I admit that I currently live in Sheboygan? We have more than our fair share of weird news stories.

Talk about a statement that sounds like it came from a mature, educated, cultured person ...

What's the point of a statment like this, gdm IV, if not pure meanness? Why do you think it necessary to say something like that?

    Mention my name in Sheboygan
It’s the greatest little town in the world
Just tell them you’re an old friend of mine
And every door in town will have a big welcome sign
So mention my name in Sheboygan
And if you ever get in a jam
Just mention my name, I said mention my name
But please don’t them where I am

I guess I missed it, Shel-tone, so what is the name of your band? And the name of your band's living namesake?

My reaction to naming a child after a band depends in large part on the band's name. I wonder about the children named after bands such as Poison, Garbage or Porno for Pyros. In a different direction would be bands like Jesus Jones or Alice Cooper. And for some bands, the gender of the child would be important, such as being named after Morningwood.

So Shel-tone, how is junior adapting to his name?

Naming a child after this kind of ignorant juvenile trash is undignified: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFU5NRVGx9A#t=1m5s

Well, I feel like a stuffy old thing, but I guess I have to agree that naming a child Lucid Dementia is pretty well over the top - sorry, Shel-Tone.

I'm still glad that we're free to name our children whatever we wish, however.

Oh it wasn't the full name, just "Lucid".

Ah - that feels better. Thanks for clearing that up, Shel-Tone.
