MVP Summit - Day 3
(with comments)

Thinking back on four years of MVP Summits, this has been the best day of all in terms of interesting information. It was Office 12 all day. Unfortunately, I can't talk about it yet. But I can say that Excel 12 is awesome. It does stuff that I didn't even think was possible. I never thought I'd be saying that about Excel, but it's true.

Tonight, it's a party and dinner at the Experience Music Project.

Excel 12: Any improvement on the protection of workbooks?

That's excellent. Sounds like a rebuild from the ground up. Man, I can hardly wait.

I'll start saving for the upgrade. Office 2000 finally bites the dust.

Where are you J-Walk??? Headlines say there is a real estate boom in destroyed Biloxi property, that much of the reported 'violence' in post-flood New Orleans never happened, the US waives sanctions against the Saudis for religious repression, a brawl broke out at the Pakistan womens' soccer final... who's going to sort all this stuff out for us???

Yeah, and I'm doing to much work! The boss's are gonna expect this kind of production all the time now. I'm afraid they think I'm on drugs and staying up all night to shell out the stuff I've done in the last 3 days.

What a great party. MS sure knows how to entertain. I was in a sound-proof room jammin' with Jake Marks and some Japanese guy. Very fun. We were going to do it again with Harald on drums, but we waited too long and it was closing down.

BTW, Harold did show up this a.m., but nobody knows what happened to him.

Tomoroww = half-day, and MS BBQ.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on anything that hasn't already been mentioned. MS is feeding this info out slowly. But I know enough to start working on the next edition of Excel Bible.

BTW, I finally met Mr. Excel, AKA Bill Jelen. Good guy. He gave everyone a copy of his The Spreadsheet At 25 book.

I can hardly wait to hear more about Office 12 from a pro. Screenshots look noce, but doesn't really say what functionality is behind it all.

Do you receive a copy of Office 12 to play with or is the software still too "wet"

John, Time to head back home...from this page:
    http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html?theprefset=PHOT&theprefvalue=0
    I read:
Hurricane Otis is expected to cross the Baja Peninsula Sunday, and quickly weaken to a tropical storm as it moves up the Gulf of California towards Arizona. By Monday, the remains of Otis should cause 3 - 5 inches of rain to fall over southern Arizona, creating flash flooding problems.
    Wow! Good luck, Wayne

What is their (hopeful) timeline for release?

Hey maybe Otis will put out the fires in California!

So Excel 12 is sounding good - but what about VBA support? Can you tell us anything about that, J-Walk?

Not that it makes much difference to me. We're still on Excel 97 at work, so I'll probably retire before we migrate to Excel 12!

How often do you suppose MVP attendees leak bits of info?

Ahaa- and I remember when a certain Mr J-Walk was thinking of tossing in the towel with Excel as there was nothing new nay more...

    Or am I wrong?!?!

Soren: watch this video about Office 12: http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=114720

That'll show you some of the exciting stuff (click the download if you want a high res version, albeit it's a gigabyte).

I'm glad the MVP summit was a good experience for you, and it was nice to meet you. I'm all for you writing next edition of "Excel Bible". I thought your book "Excel Charts" was done really well. If anybody hasn't picked that up yet, you should.

Way cool! Could care less about the Outlook program, but Word, Power Point and Excel look like they have some pretty userfreindly changes. I am real impressed with the live previewing, step saving features and the galleries. I was sold 5 minutes into that video.

Great. Does that mean that those of us who think in terms of three dimensional mathematical constructs can now set up triaxial spreadsheets and autofill 3D matrices?
