Luggage Collectors
(with comments)

In Phoenix: Pair arrested in theft of bags at airport.

Two people suspected of stealing up to 1,000 pieces of luggage from baggage claim carousels at Phoenix's airport have been arrested by police who found heaps of the stolen bags strewn throughout their home.

There were so many suitcases that Phoenix police could only give a rough estimate of their number Tuesday as they pulled them out one by one and gathered them in the yard of Keith Wilson King and Stacy Lynne Legg-King's suburban residence.

"A piece of luggage here, a piece of luggage there, I would imagine gets stolen out of airports all the time," Phoenix police Detective James Holmes said Tuesday. "This is a livelihood. There's a lot of luggage and there's a lot of victims."

I'm always amazed at how easy it would be to steal luggage at those airport conveyers -- especially in Phoenix.

I always thought it was odd that there is no longer someone there at the Baggage Claim to make sure you grab the right piece of luggage. Anyone can step up and grab a bag. For all the security they subject the passengers to, there seems to be none for the cargo.

You would think the TSA would be all over this, with security being their middle name. Unfortunately, the TSA is only concerned with the appearance of doing something, they don't care about doing anything that helps or protects the traveler.

Doesn't look like they were getting any couture clothing out of there.

I worked in the baggage office in Austin today. We share a baggage carousel with Frontier and United. Sometimes all three of us are putting bags on it at the same time. It would be really difficult to screen who is taking what. As a passenger, the best thing to do is get to the bag claim and get your bag. Sometimes people don't come get their luggage for hours. Our average time from when the plane blocks in to when the last bag is on the belt is 20 minutes. People already complain about this, I can't begin to imagine how many people would be yelling if we made them line up and check receipts. I'm sure checking all claims could be done again but the fact is, there is a lot more people flying than there used to be. As far as TSA is concerned, baggage claim is outside the "secure area". They could care less.

I remember the first time I arrived at Sky Harbour for a conference in Phoneix. Luggage was piled up everywhere and people were freely going out AND coming in from outside.

I'm just surprised that this doesn't happen a lot more often.

After looking at the pictures, it is apparent that owning 1000 pieces of luggage is not the key to happiness.

Shouldn't luggage claim be INSIDE the security perimeter? It never made sense to me - at a lot of airports it is literally right next to the door!

@Fast Eddie I agree, people would throw a fit if they has to queue up for luggage claim.

Wok...regarding "Bubbs" reference. This isn't about stealing shopping carts for resale so why drag Bubbles into yet another mess he can barely cope with?

I love the Trailer Park Boys. Why they're just like family!

A friend observed some years back that checking luggage against receipts was a big to do, relatively speaking, prior to 9/11. After that, anyone who hauled those liabilities away from the airport was a hero.

Came for the Trailer Park Boys reference, leaving satisfied.

It wasn't Bubbles though. It was J-Roc's crew who pulled that particular caper. Bubbs was strictly a cart guy. Easy to justify since he spent all his money on catfood at the same place he stole the carts from.

Ah you're right of course. Thanks for the correction.

I can't bear to watch the last movie.

I LOVE Trailer Park Boys too...in fact, I have had a remote customer name my log on computer "Bubbles".
I giggle every time I log on.

The City of Chicago improved things by extending the light rail system to O'Hare. Now, when thieves need a new wardrobe or shaving gear, they can pay a couple of dollars for the train and come back with everything they can carry. Probably takes a few tries to get it right but you get the idea.

    Nor shampoo/hair care products.
