HTML 5 Audio Test
(with comments)

If you have Firefox 3.5, this should work. It might also work with the latest version of some other browsers, too.

It uses a very simple HTML 5 AUDIO tag (no special music player required). Unfortunately, it works only with WAV and Ogg files.

The tune is "Eadle Alley" played by Melvin Wine.

    Doesn't work, Mac OS 10.5

or Firefox 3.0.11 ... maybe that's the problem.

Just updated Firefox so I could hear the music.

    That was worth it.

    No go for Chrome

Works for me with Firefox 3.5 - does not with Safari 4.0.
Opera 9.6 doesn't even show the player, just this message - Your browser does not support the audio tag.
Overall, I'm enjoying the new Firefox.

Here's another test of the AUDIO tag, with a very nice song:

Also, notice that you can right-click on the player control and get a context menu with some options -- including saving the file.

I have FF 3.5 and it works..sort of. Left and right buttons do not have labels. Hovering over the right hand button makes the widget become bigger. It does play the music though.

Doesn't seem to offer a volume control. You'd think that was kind of important.

Here's what it looks like in Firefox 3.5. It increases size vertically when it's buffering -- which is kind of annoying and serves no purpose at all that I can see.

I suspect that the appearance varies by browser.

It doesn't work in Internet Explorer, though my version of IE is probably a year old.

    Who cares?

It works for me in Chrome 3.0.190.4 (Preview release).

The looked awful in Firefox 3.5 for me, although it worked. I only got a couple of white squares and an empty tracker box.

I switched to the default Firefox theme (skin), Strata, and restarted the browser. Looks good now. I was using the Phoenity Classic theme.

The newest version of Phoenity Classic supports the player controls. I just updated and now it looks fine.

Thanks, I didn't even realize there was an upgrade to Firefox.

    Phil -

Me neither, and I usually get email notifications of updates.

    I was still running 3.0.11.

J-W - Thanks for picking that tune, I've been meaning to look it up on your worm's tune library but never got around to it. Nice, now I have to figure out if I want chords or the fiddle for it.

Works in NetNewsWire 3.1.7 on Mac OS 10.5, released in 2008. I guess it uses Webkit, which is much more recent.

I usually try to stick with Ubuntu's recommendations for updates, but my Firefox is 3.0.11. I may just have to go outside for 3.5 because nothing works for me.
    Can't have that!

Brad, don't overlook the version by The Haints (in both of our libraries). Much easier to learn from, I think.

    Works Firefox 3.5 and OS X 10.4.11.
    thanks for the tuneful tune.

The buttons aren't labeled (which I find odd), the left one is for play/pause, the right one is evidently Mute, and then there is a pop-up for the volume control.

    3.5 nightly, NOT the release.

Mac doesn't support ogg files natively, so I downloaded the codec. I can download and play the file in quicktime now, and controls show up to play the file in safari 4, but it doesn't seem to want to play.
