FBI Wants To Track You Online
(with comments)

Privacy? FBI wants records kept of Web sites visited.

The FBI is pressing Internet service providers to record which Web sites customers visit and retain those logs for two years, a requirement that law enforcement believes could help it in investigations of child pornography and other serious crimes.

FBI Director Robert Mueller supports storing Internet users' "origin and destination information," a bureau attorney said at a federal task force meeting on Thursday.

The FBI is not alone in renewing its push for data retention. As CNET reported earlier this week, a survey of state computer crime investigators found them to be nearly unanimous in supporting the idea. Matt Dunn, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in the Department of Homeland Security, also expressed support for the idea during the task force meeting.

Sounds outrageous, but it's really nothing new.

Greg Motta, the chief of the FBI's digital evidence section, said that the bureau was trying to preserve its existing ability to conduct criminal investigations. Federal regulations in place since at least 1986 require phone companies that offer toll service to "retain for a period of 18 months" records including "the name, address, and telephone number of the caller, telephone number called, date, time and length of the call."

Countdown until somebody write a comment: Well, if you aren't doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about ...

(Thanks Blayne)

If the Feds can track all this crap competently I think that's pretty good evidence they can administrate health insurance.

The more likely problem is them being unable to tell the difference between idle perusing and genuine interest. What if I would like to know how terrorists make bombs? Knowing that information helps me protect my family. I might visit a bomb-making site out of my own curiosity. My internet habits would look exactly the same as one who really wanted to make a bomb.

It's all for nothing anyway. If Palin starts a revolution from her white-haired ignorant base, the energetic and uncontrollable youngsters will attempt to shut them down and soon we'll be ungovernable. Time to buy a ranch in Montana.

Shel-tone: of the 300 million in this country that "might" be able to use the internet, about 1/3 are probably exempt from such monitoring and data colletion, including all members of Congress, the Administration, and Justice Department. That probably means all lobbyists, and state (& local) governments plus all law enforcement, military, and everybody outside of the country that can't be prosecuted (including all spammers and porno pushers/users). Of couse, the big business spenders, now that they can legally buy off government and law enforcement, are also exempt. Who is left but the middle class and some below the middle class that can find access to the internet.

However, like all government agencies, once they get all that data, they have no idea what to do with it since any decisions they want to make will all be politically motivated (don't bother me with the facts, I am making a decision here).

Funny that this topic should appear today, since my husband and I were just talking about something similar. What if you ARE merely curious about something, or curious but with a totally legitimate reason? Here's my example - while watching the State of the Union address a couple of weeks ago, it occurred to me to wonder... what would happen if, somehow - natural disaster, bomb, gas - but somehow, that whole room full of senators, congressmen, everyone, was wiped out? What would happen - domestically, globally? To society, I mean? Hubby said "look it up on the internet," but I wouldn't feel safe doing a search like that, not in these paranoid days. But seriously.. what would happen, if our whole federal government was gone in an instant? Would the military step in? Would there be a battle for the role of leader? Would the stock market immediately crash? I'm just curious. It might even make a good book, but how to research it?

sfsue - thank you! I had no idea such a policy existed, but I guess when I think about it, our leaders would have to have been incredibly short-sighted not to have put something like that in place.
another larry - thanks for the chuckle. And Former Lurker - Yes, I couldn't agree more!!! It seems to me that we are indeed in an us vs them situation, but the "us" is the general population of the country and the "them" is the government. Its not R vs D or liberal vs conservative. I don't see how we are ever going to get anywhere with righting what is wrong with this country, until we accept that reality.

HumanMage80, are you sure you weren't just having a happy daydream about politicians en masse disappearing in a puff of smoke?

I'd like to pop them all into another reality somewhere - preferably one where they'd have to work for a living - and pull people in off the street to replace them.

Every single day I read about another one of our congressional representatives who disgraces the country with their behavior; I'm sick to death of all of of them -

    especially this one: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/02/05/cbsnews_investigates/main6178817.shtml

How is it we have people like this in positions of power in this country?

I've about decided to vote for Palin for President next time. I think it was a mistake to vote Obama in and hope he could do something to save the country because the people simply don't deserve it. It may be time to let the country collapse completely - I mean, completely fold in upon itself - and the government simply dissolve from its own greed and corruption. After the rioting ends, maybe, like the phoenix, the country can rise from its ashes to a fresh start.

There is no way Obama or anyone else can be expected to accomplish anything with the organized obstruction he faces, some from his own party, many of whom are jumping ship like the rats they are. The Republicans care nothing about the country, only about strengthening their party position and securing their own financial interests.

Yes, I think it's time to dump the whole mess down the garbage disposal and clean the sink. Hope I live long enough to watch this mess gurgle away.

I have considered that, too, Mary. The recent Supreme Court decision has probably accelerated the process. Might be a good thing in the long run...but a heck of a mess in the meantime.

Spokane Mary - You may be right. I wonder how many men in that room really have the best interests of the country, and their constituents, at heart. I hope that there may still be a few in Washington who are trying to do what they were elected to do, but I think it's a small number.
As to Sarah Palin.. my husband likes her, because he says she doesn't know enough about politics to be a crook. If that's the best thing one of her fans can say about her, well... talk about damning with faint praise.
What got me about her was that she didn't KNOW how much she didn't know. She thought she was right on top of everything, when she so clearly wasn't. That kind of arrogant stupidity just isn't fixable. We definitely need some new brooms in Washington, but they need to have all their bristles.

You may call me nuts, but I have come to the conclusion that hours before elected officials in Washington are to take their oaths of office, they are taken into a secret room by members of some sinister organization (the CIA?) and explicitly told how things on Capitol Hill really work. They are then forced to pledge their allegiance to that organization.

I know it seems far fetched, but this would certainly explain some of the things that have happened there in the last four years.

Well, fair's fair: The last Joe I knew was a slumlord whose name is well known all over this town. The Fire Dept shut down one of his apartment buildings for code violations and made everyone vacate the premises one afternoon; he had been warned repeatedly that the place was a hazard, but he did nothing. The local paper carred a few pictures of the place and it was unbelievable.

I was managing a wonderful old building here - 23 units - until the owner died and the family put it up for sale. Joe bought it. I left about six months later because I couldn't stand it anymore.

One thing about Joe, though: If you were a crackhead or a meth-head, he could always be counted on to have a place for you to stay - all he wanted was cash up front and he didn't care about anything else. He bought, trashed, and lost one building after another. I don't know where he went, but apparently he's left town; I'd like to think he's in prison where he belongs, but that's not likely.

LOL what a waste of time..
If you have unlimited bandwidth, which I think most in the U.S. do now, then just set up a PC to go to random sites 24hrs a day.. and then your real surfing will be impossible to extracte from that.
    ;-)
Where I worked once they wanted to check on what sites that had logins that staff visited. I simply searched for the word "login" and then set up a program called "badboy" to keep visiting every site in the list.. After about one hour I was rung by them pleading me to stop, because their log files filled up.

I'm not doing anything wrong when I urinate, have sex, or evacuate my bowels, but it doesn't mean I want anyone watching me.
