Faith Mountain Procedures
(with comments)

The excitement is mounting. We're less than one hour away from the big Faith Mountain drawing. I thought I'd let you all know how it works.

  1. At 3:00 pm (my time) I will shut down the big blue button.
  2. I will download a CSV history file from PayPal for the dates 8/7 through 8/11.
  3. I will import the data into Excel 2007 beta, and weed out any payments that were for other things.
  4. I will delete all of the irrelevant columns and leave only these: Date, Time, Name, Address, Email, Gross (amount paid), and Transaction ID.
  5. I will create a new column (called Chances) with a formula that divides Gross by 2. That will give me the number of chances purchased.
  6. I will run a macro that duplicates the rows for everyone who purchased more than one chance. For example, if Joe Blow purchased five chances, he will have five rows of data.
  7. I will add another column called Random. This column will contain the formula =RAND(), which generates a random number between 0 and 1.
  8. I will go outside and get Pamn from the pool so she can witness the drawing.
  9. I will press F9 five times to regenerate the random numbers.
  10. Finally, I will sort the table (from high to low) using the Random column as the sort key.
  11. The person who's row is at the top is the first prize winner. The person who's name is below that is the second prize winner.
  12. I will contact the two winners by email and tell them the good news. And also ask for permission to announce their name/screen name. I understand that some people may want their privacy.
  13. When I've heard back from the winners, I'll make the announcements.

That's how it will work. Good luck, and thanks for participating.

If Joe Blow wins, I am going to accuse him of cheating.

This is so exciting. I wish I'd participated.
But I just couldn't take a chance on being he winner.

When I win, I'll use the prize to convert souls to the truth and rightiousness of our fine lord and holy savior.
those who reject me and my lordlet will forever be cast into a lake of fire or an excel spreadsheet, not unlike the one mentioned above, whichever is more annoying.
Those that agree with me and accept the J-man will forever eat bacon at the foot of god.
    amen

Please let us know how many times Excel 2007 crashes during this exercise. :-)

Oh, this is waaaaaay to complicated. I'm gonna go drink some nice, chilled rose'. I'll check my email and this site periodically.

This process will give Jim and Esther time to move.

Ok. What's the big blue button? Have you given your computer a name?

Just to see how good John's processes are, I click the Button at 3:02 and was given the "too late" notice. What a SysAdmin!

Where are the results? Is the macro still compiling?
  11. By . Comment posted 11-Aug-2006 @03:18pm:
The winners have been selected, and notified.

The first place winner bought 10 chances, and the second place winner bought 2.

Looking at the ranked list, I see that Wendy! would have been a winner if we had 10 prizes.

How much money did you make?
  13. By . Comment posted 11-Aug-2006 @03:22pm:
180 chances were sold which = $360 for WWR.

The only thing I've ever won in a raffle was a Shetland pony. A mean, biting Shetland pony, named Woodstock. It was at some tack shop I used to frequent. But, I did win in the end. I sold him for $275.00 and I only paid a buck for the ticket.

But, I didn't win Faith Mountain and now I am crushed.

It started as a gag gift and ended up with a generous donation to WWR. This is truly the work of the Lord. Amen Amen. Halleluja.

Hmmm... is that how you spell that word?

I'm so disappointed that I didn't win the Faith Mountain. You just can't buy that sort of trash in my country.

Is there a 12-step program for those of us who were addicted to the Faith Mountain experience?

Fear not, Jim, your experience may not yet be over.

Any chance I can look at the macro you wrote to to duplicate the rows for anyone who purchased more than one ticket? I going to be doing the same type of auction in the next few weeks (though not for a big faith mountain), and being the excel noob that I am, would find this quite handy.

    Thanks.
