Selling To Captive Audiences
(with comments)

An article about airlines trying to sell stuff to their customers: Airline tests retail sales at 35,000 feet.

Air travelers in the United States are already paying for sandwiches and drinks, pillows and headsets. So, as airlines look for more ways to help their bottom lines, they have started asking the next logical question: Why not sell limousine services or even tickets to Broadway shows?

Other airlines declined to talk on the record about their plans, but nearly all the major carriers acknowledged that they were working on expanding retail offerings.

An American Airlines rep sez:

"We're not going to put anything in front of you that you would say, ‘You got to be kidding.' "

From the SkyMall catalog: A $165 Book Holder.

You got to be kidding!

An airline trying to sell luxury-level products seems a bit ludicrous. They should stick to cattle prods and ear tags.

A friend on holiday in USA brought me a SkyMall catalog.

Almost every page got me saying "You got to be kidding".

"We're not going to put anything in front of you that you would say, ‘You got to be kidding." That is exactly my first reaction to SkyMall. My second is to wonder how many gagillion barrels of petroleum are burned each year hauling those catalogs all over the planet.

My mansion is filled with wondrous and uniquely useful items from Sky Mall. I'm serious.

That book holder would be great for keeping the book from hitting my face when I fall asleep reading in bed, which happens approximately seven times a week.

Is this designed for a paraplegic?

I had to have physical therapy for a shoulder injury and part of it was to lay on a heating pad for 25 minutes. I would have loved to have a book holder for that. Does it turn pages automatically? Because I would think that the process of removing the right page from the holder, then tucking under the left holder and straightening it all out would take just long enough to annoy me in the flow of reading the story.

My wonderful wife bought me that book holder several years ago at a much lower price. At that time my arthritis was untreated and holding a book for any length of time was agony. I'm an avid reader so the choice was between pain and book withdrawal. The book holder saved my sanity. And no, I don't use it in that position, normal reading position only.

We actually bought something like that to hold a laptop computer at the right position so we can watch movies on our treadmill. I can easily imagine a home without one, but it's great being able to pop in a DVD or stream a show while working out. (Yes, we could buy a television set and a DVD player, but we already own a laptop computer and it gets streaming video so we don't have to record shows. We can just play them.)
