Pat Robertson’s Charity
(with comments)

If you're inclined to donate some money to the hurricane relief efforts, here's something you may not know. The organization known as Operation Blessing is run by Pat Robertson.

Operation Blessing is governed by a national board of directors that includes founder M. G. Robertson and retired COO Robert W. Fanning.

Yes, M.G. Robertson is his real name. The board of directors also includes his wife and his son. I'm sure they all get a nice salary for their service.

Operation Blessing is endorsed by FEMA, and I've also seen it listed on the CNN news channel. Operation Blessing has also received federal money as part of Bush's "faith based" initiative.

And this, from Wikepedia:

Two of Operation Blessing's pilots, Robert Hinkle and Tahir Brohi, told the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot newspaper that Operation Blessing planes were diverted to support Robertson's diamond mining ventures. "We got over there and we had 'Operation Blessing' painted on the tails of the airplanes, Hinkle told the Virginian-Pilot, "but we were doing no humanitarian relief at all. We were just supplying the miners and flying the dredges from Kinshasa out to Tdshikapa." Robertson's spokesperson first denied the allegations, then later said that the planes were deemed unsuitable for relief work.

This may be a perfectly legitimate charity. But do you really want to funnel your contribution through a slimeball like Pat Robertson?

So, anytime this nut is in the news, he gets free exposure on this very popular blog.

Maybe he's trying to raise money to send a "mechanic" down to Venezuela and give Hugo Chavez a "tune-up".

Just contribute at http://www.redcross.org and select "2005 Hurricane relief".

Making profit out of religion is dodgy enough, but digging profit out of charity is just plain disgusting.

Charity Navigator is a group that evaluate charities so that people can decide where to direct their money.

Operation Blessing looks like they do a great job of directing contributions to programs as opposed to administration expenses.

I'm not planning on donating to them. I will throw in a plug for another religious based group, The Salvation Army. They are usually right out there on the disaster scene, sometime even more so than the Red Cross.

I know there has been a lot of religious bashing on this site but I've got to give a lot of credit to the churches here in Memphis. It's estimated we have about 15,000 refugees here now. The churches have really stepped up to the task and are doing a great job in providing shelter and food.

Watching the news last night and surfing trying to find new footage when I saw some a flash of trucks with food and supplies marked "Operation Blessing". I was like, "Hey, I saw that on J-Walk", so I kept watching. The tone of the news report seemed odd, almost staged with interviews always having the "Operation Blessing" trucks in the background. Kinda seemed like an infomercial . . . Uh Oh. . . Then the awful truth came out as they cutaway to Pat, yep, I had ended up on the Fam channel and the 700 Club. Geeze, how sleezy can you get? Pimping your own charity, that you make $$ off of, or at least draw a "stipend". Just think of the logistics to get trucks and the Infomercial production crew with an attractive host ( following close behind for sure ), to some trashed town in the Gulf Coast, get some raw footage, edit it and turn it into a slick commercial all in two days time. GaaK!

Just to clarify, I have nothing against Faith Based organizations, they lead the charge in these situations and provide an needed compassionate side to the Government & Military lock-step methods ( or lack of ) in dealing with a crisis. The best channel for donations is through those companies or fraternal organizations that do matching donations. Oh, Also just heard that US corporate donations for Katrina passed the 100 million mark with Wal-Mart leading the way at $15 Million ( ok so they only pledged $1 Million originally, but who's counting ).
