Nikon DSLR And Lenses For Sale
I took took cameras on our recent trip: my little Canon SD87IS, and my Nikon D100 digital SLR. Here's a summary of the number of photos taken with each:
- Canon: 361
- Nikon: 0
That Nikon is certainly a fine camera -- although it's been succeeded by two newer models. I also have four excellent lenses for it (I used to be very much into photography). But it's just so heavy and cumbersome to carry around that I don't.
What I like best about the digital SLR is the image quality, lack of shutter delay, and the ability to get a very narrow depth of field. But, in the final analysis, I'm willing to give these up for convenience. The photos I took with the little Canon are just fine for my purposes.
So, I'm pretty sure I'll be selling all of my Nikon DSLR gear:
- Nikon D100 body, with Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens, and SB-80X Speedlight
- Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D
- Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR
- Nikon 12-24mm f/2.8
These items are all in excellent condition. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Alternately, have you set a firm price? I'm interested, and I know a couple good friends who are also in the market. - By . Comment posted 08-May-2008 @12:33pm:I haven't even thought of pricing it. I'll probably base it on recent eBay sales. Purchasing the whole bunch would make it easy on me, and I'd offer a decent discount.

I travel to & from Alderney (a tiny island in the English Channel) on this:- http://flickr.com/photos/neilsingapore/2095770815/ very, very often. I carry in my standard, over the shoulder, computer bag (with my not too small Laptop) a dSLR, an extra lens, some filters, spare battery, remote control AND a "gorillapod" tripod!
All of this is not cumbersome at all, because it is the SMALLEST dSLR! If you want to replace yours, look at the Olympus E-410. It is tiny & light, and is not a "toy", but a serious machine.
Of course the Nikon brigade pooh-pooh it because it isn't a Nikon, but have a look at it (and it's price) in the shop.
Look at my photostream too, if you want to see what I do with it.

Though a few years old, it does everything the new cameras can do (without some of the pointless bells and whistles i.e live screen view). Its 6.1 MP which is absolutely plenty unless you need a camera to do billboards for times square. And to Neil, Olympus cameras I am sorry to say are most definitely weak sauce. They use the same sensors from their P&S cameras!!! What kind of garbage is that? So john, do not get an olympus...And someone buy this camera!!!
- By Sean. Comment posted 08-May-2008 @02:02pm:Whoops, I OWN a d100.
- By major_danny. Comment posted 08-May-2008 @03:12pm:I predict this post will trigger a bunch of sales of new Canon Powershot cameras from online merchants.
- By . Comment posted 08-May-2008 @05:30pm:A little over a year ago, I purchased a Canon Powershot SD100 camera on ebay after using a friend's. I liked the size of the package and the fact that I could use both the camera and the computer downloading software without cracking open the instruction manuals. It seems like it will be all the camera I will need for quite a while.
BTW - the whole package, including two extra batteries and a boatload of memory for the camera cost me less than $120 including shipping. - By sparx. Comment posted 08-May-2008 @07:04pm:Oh, man. I've been thinking about getting another SLR for some time now. (Last one I had was 35mm).
- By wormpicker. Comment posted 08-May-2008 @08:12pm:It's tempting, J-Walk. Could you turn it into a Canon 40D with a EF100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS/USM lens?
- By wormpicker. Comment posted 08-May-2008 @08:24pm:Whoa! I just noticed those two f2.8 lenses. I don't know Nikon, but I'll bet those two should earn you a pretty penny--probably much more than the camera for either of them.
- By . Comment posted 08-May-2008 @08:33pm:Yeah, those are some high-quality lenses. They are both US models, not grey market imports.
I'm hoping to get around $1,200 for the 70-200mm and $700 for the 12-24mm. - By wormpicker. Comment posted 08-May-2008 @08:41pm:That's a couple banjos, right there...
- By Rance. Comment posted 08-May-2008 @09:48pm:Dude...I just upgraded to a D200 from my D70. Much better pictures especially for northern lights. And I recently bought a 70-300mm with "VR" for just under 500 clams! I can reach out and touch someone! You should try packing all that around in a pelican case for an hour. Must weigh 50 lbs. Does the D100 have the built in remote? The D70 does and the 200 does not. One thing I truly miss. But the 200 sure does kick out the pictures in Continuous High...
- By Neil. Comment posted 08-May-2008 @11:18pm:Following Sean's comments, I rest my case

Even if it was true (which it isn't, the CCD is the same aspect ratio as the P&S cameras, that is all) John's alternative is? Oh yes, a point & shoot camera! LOL
I was just making the point that with constant travel, there are alternatives to point & shoot for portability, which give the option of putting decent lenses & functionality in hand.
I know the limitations too.
