    No, that's high and dry.
Most of the damage from that storm came from the area where Bisbonian lives. The San Lorenzo Valley. Many land slides. The river swelled with water and debris... it caused damage to the bridges in Santa Cruz. It was really strange to have such a huge storm one day and a beautiful sunny day the next.

I'm a bit bored today so I have been making food things. I currently have an Orange/Lemon gelato chilling down and a flourless orange cake in the oven. Dinner is going to be chicken slow cooked with anchovies, olive, tomatoes, red wine and a few other bits accompanied by a potato/sorrel pave and brussels sprouts braised in onion, garlic and white wine.

    Should be good.

When Camille and I were on our way back home recently we stopped at Rainbow Lake under Rainbow Mountain near Rotorua, New Zealand. There were literally hundreds of swallows flying just above the water.

Rainbow lake is a hotwater lake in a very active geothermal area. Maybe they were doing it to keep warm as I couldn't see any insects. The swallows didn't seem at all bothered by us.

I got a couple of videos of them, not great quality, which I have posted on my blog, http://blog.thrashcardiom.com

Re. Micro-climates in Monterey Bay area. Years ago we took a day motorcycle ride from Santa Cruz, over Mt Hamilton, through Livermore to Half Moon Bay and back to SC.
We had a temperature swing of 60 degrees that day. It's hard to dress for those conditions.

Absolutely, Chris. Last week, we came back from the Woodys on the Wharf car show..75 down on the wharf, 85 at Felton, 91 in Ben Lomond, 93 pulling into Boulder Creek, and about 80 in our shady yard.

Yesterday I rode the bike up through Bonny Doon and down to Davenport, and saw similar swings. Pretty cool at Stevens Creek.

We lived in La Selva Beach for a while, Meg, in a fog bank that almost never went away. I fly over into San Jose and Oakland a few times a week, and it is real common for that fog bank to extend over Aromas, all the way to Pacheco Pass.

We don't get much marine layer here, though...mostly it comes up to Felton or a bit farther. If we do get it, it is burning off much earlier here than a few miles down the valley.

I was wheelbarrowing sand in the garden today--33C/85F--with sweat running down my face despite a couple of bandannas. On a CBC TV science show, just learned the following science trivia. If you reduced all the stars in the Milky Way to the size of grains of sand, the number of stars would be equivalent to one dumptruck load of sand. Your basic dumptruck will hold 10 cubic yards or 270 cubic feet of sand. 270 cubic feet of sand is equal to 90 full-sized wheelbarrow loads, if you don't skimp with your shovel. I only did 12 wheelbarrow loads. That's still a lot of stars.

Like to think the Dixie Chicks did their part to end the years of Republican bungling and evil. Happy July 4th, America. You're the world's second greatest nation--right after Canada--but that's why you try harder. That's admirable. Being north of the 49th is a bit like living near a hillbilly trailer park but you're not bad neighbors in a crunch and that's what matters.

We normally live a pretty quiet life. Twenty-five people including spouses and kids is going to be a riot. (I can think of two kids who make me wonder if I should put electric fence around the flower garden. At some point, they're going to be up on the roof.) Maybe we could try broadaxe tossing for pre-dinner entertainment. We usually juggle running chainsaws but that gets old.

We have Pacific Giant delphiniums--and Russell lupines--in our garden and I'm pretty sure I can tell the two apart. And the difference between delphinium and monkshood. Mention monkshood because its individual flower shape is somewhat similar to lupine. Maybe you were thinking of monkshood (Aconitum). This photo may help you see the foliage and flower shape more clearly and recognize the plants as lupines.

A few Greek Island pics ... these from Patmos, a less 'touristy' island near the Turkish coast.

Most Greek islands cannot dock cruise ships, so you get ferried ashore in a fleet of local tenders like this one. The crews are highly experienced, docking with millimetre precision while throwing ropes, walking on handrails, berating other boats and assisting passengers ashore. Very entertaining !

Numerous cats (and dogs) roam free in every town and city of Greece .. they belong to the municipality and receive food and vetrinary care from them. Locals and tourists also feed and pet them.

Once ashore, you have the choice of souvenir shops selling hats, tee shirts and jewellery ....

...or you can walk the alleyways and find plentiful jewels of another kind

Being an island, the beaches are always popular. This early in the season they are mainly used for alfresco dining and watching the passing parade.

Most Greek islands have an expat Aussie contingent. This is unsurprising against the fact that Australia has the largest 'Greek' population outside of Greece itself
... The US is not far behind.

We found this entrance with signs saying "Sydney Australia" (to the left of the door), and were tempted to knock.

My favourite, though, was this weatherbeaten portico

    Santa Cruz Ca. Boarwalk. 1982

I made a short visit there in 1978 when I was 19 years old, it was quite memorable for 2 reasons besides the fact it was beautiful place:

    1. I'm walking into a convenience store to buy cigarettes, two younger teenagers try to get me to buy them beer. They must think I'm 21. I politely tell them no with letting them know my true age. I buy the cigarettes, and as I'm leaving the clerk thanks for trying to buy the teens beer.
    He thought I was 21!

    2. I'm walking in the downtown area, smoking. Two homeless-looking guys ask me for a smoke. I give each them one and a light. We're walking along together, when 2 cops suddenly point at us and start coming towards us. I'm thinking which of these two is wanted?
The cops grab me - and make me pick up the butt I had just dropped on the ground.

Sudden Impact was filmed there. It was the first movie where I had a "hey I've been there" moment, I mean, been at that location.

    ...without letting them know...

I would say doh!, but my mistake kept it under the 1000 character limit.

    Doh! #1, corrected correctly:

    Sudden Impact was filmed there.

The spot where Sandra Locke is looking out at the water is Mitchell's Cove. Nice little barrel wave there sometimes. I haven't tried it yet, though.

Nice shots, Chris. Been a couple of years for me since we last visited California. My wife goes every year. Maybe this fall. Like to see my wife's dad in La Jolla at least once more.

Y Nought .. you are obviously familiar with the area. We did not sign up for the religious side tour to the "cave" where the Book of Revelations was allegedly written, although many did.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_of_the_Apocalypse
Modern scholars disagree on the detail .. this link for those interested.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Revelation.

Don C .. my audio-book Greek could not cope with that onslaught (grin) .. neither could Babelfish .. although I got your drift !
    ευχαριστώ πολύ λουκάνικο

Eenie M .. the animals are calm, even listless, to the point of being a nuiscance to traffic, etc. The Greeks are incredibly caring and charitable people, and most seem to feed or care for these animals, and even the numerous (illegal) immigrant beggars .. although the latter are clearly testing their resources and patience (it's time for the EU to get off its butt and help).
