I’m A Banjo Hangout Thread Stopper
(with comments)

A few days ago, I made a comment in a Banjo Hangout thread that caused the thread to be closed. The topic was Genesis. It started like this:

Being a big fan of R. Crumb, both as an artist and as a musician (I love the Cheap Suit Serenaders), I've been really anxious to pick up a copy of his recently published take on the book of Genesis. I got it last night, and I'm really enjoying it.

This morning, partly because it's what I listen to, and partly because it's what R. Crumb listens to, I started thinking of old time tunes that relate to the book of Genesis.

A few people contributed, including myself. Then I had a clever brainstorm and posted a second comment:

And then there's one tune that summarizes the entire book: "Fly Around My Pretty Little Myth."

It's only funny if you're familiar with an old-time tune called "Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss." In any case, nine minutes later, a moderator closed the thread.

The Banjo Hangout doesn't allow religious posts, unless they are pro-religion. As an example, take a look at this one, about a tune called Baptist Shout. The original poster asked about the origins of this tune. The first reply was:

I love this tune as well. Great melody line and as believers in CHRIST, theres alot to "shout" about concerning this new life and the one to come.

I made this reply, and was accused of being intolerant:

C'mon Rob. Save it for church. I come here for banjos, not religion.

The Banjo Hangout is a great forum, but they sure don't enforce the rules consistently.

Oh, snap, you filthy heathen! Crumb, BTW, was pretty damned good on Talk of the Nation this week, promoting an atheist's version of the origin story. Yippie!

You should start commenting under your alias (Roger) on that site.

congrats on the threadstopping. i don't understand, though: are the rules actually that they only allow positive mentions of religion?

I like the Cheap Suit Serenaders too.

That's kinda touchy of them to close the thread on the "myth" remark. Any traditional story can be classified as a myth. Bunch o' big babies.

Whoever owns the blog can do whatever he/she wishes, right?

How many times have people complained to you that you were unfair or intolerant and your response was that you never claimed to be fair or tolerant?

Being a commenter is different from being a blogmeister, I guess. I'd just use the blog for the banjo content and ignore the rest.

We've had the same problem on the TDPRI at times. At least over there the ratio of heathen to christian types is about even.

Yeah, there are some great folks on banjohangout but I got disenchanted with incidents like this. That and the new threads started every day asking "is index or middle finger the authentic way to play clawhammer" and "Is it ok if I play this one note in Foggy Mountain Breakdown differently than Earl Scruggs does?"

    To quote Joel Mabus,

"I grabbed my Bible, and a mouthful of cheese,
    and got right down on my sinful knees;
I got more religion than a dog's got fleas.
    I'm gettin' ready to go."

Fly around you pretty little Myth, ha! Would like to see the rest of the lyrics to that parody. Come on Weird Al, you can make it happen!

I came across the traditional(?) version via a great group of ladies, called the Figs. Their first album is on eMusic, though their version of ”Fly Around...“ is on their second album

I thought that lock was pretty silly, myself. I once put a very philosophical and non-controversial quote from the Prophet Mohammad in my signature line, and one of the mods instantly deleted it. So with the BHO, the Bible is okay, but the Koran is not. I am assuming the Bagda Vita is probably forbidden also.

I'm also a big fan of the Serenaders. I've had a lot of fun doing versions of Alabama Jubilee, Fine Artiste Blues and Suits Crybaby Blues on guitar. They make fun fare at coffeehouses and open mikes. I've been listening to their stuff forever. It's great to know there are more fans out there.

I bet Crumb would have a laugh at this biblical "controversy". You know he isn't worried about being hit by lightning... You'd think these believers wouldn't be so sensitive if they were so sure of God's "word".

Well, I just challenged them to lock a post because it was religious. Let's see what happens with it.

    R. Crumb is brilliant. Your comment seems harmless, but I guess those people who have trouble parsing faith from fact get a little touchy when you talk about the mythology behind their beliefs. Cheers!
