Find An Atheist Contest
(with comments)
Win $1,000: "Find an Atheist, Humanist, Freethinker Elected Official" Contest.
The Secular Coalition for America (SCA) will award one thousand dollars ($1,000) to the person who identifies the highest level atheist, humanist, freethinker or other nontheist currently holding elected public office in the United States of America.* The SCA is an advocacy organization representing the interests of nontheists in the nation's capital.
Why?
Members of other groups once precluded from the political arena because of prejudice (such as women, African Americans, Jews, Mexican Americans, Mormons and gay/lesbians) have been elected to public offices; however, atheists, humanists, freethinkers and other nontheists are invisible in the electoral arena.
Deadline: Dec. 31, 2006.

How does that square with the idea of 3 separate but equal branches of government? Does a Supreme Court justice trump a US senator? a non-elected but influential policy advisor? Inquiring minds just want to inquire... - By Joe. Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @08:26am:judges are appointed so in theory a senator would be eligible, but a judge would not.
I doubt you'd find an elected official in the federal government willing to admit they are atheist, unless you plan on "outing" someone.
I'm guessing you'll get as high as County Waste Management Supervisor. - By . Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @09:25am:I would nominate all elected officials as not believing in a God since none of them actually act as if they believe there is, other than pandering to various religious or faking a prayer.
Most of them believe they are God or on a mission to create a God.
I've never met anyone who truly believes there is a God. I've met people who mouthed a lot of Dogma but in the back of their mind they doubted the existence of a God.
Most people do believe that God is their handpuppet to do and say what they want. - By Dave Lartigue. Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @10:19am:We'll have a female black, lesbian, jewish, handicapped Green-Party president before we'll have an atheist one.

- By Gee.... Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @01:29pm:If public officials are elected that makes them public servants and since I'm an atheist and I elected them that makes me their boss and so makes me the winner as the highest ranking atheist.
- By . Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @01:51pm:C'mon - what high-ranking public official would declare himself an atheist?
That's probably exactly what atheists need - some candidate to step up to the plate and run as an atheist. Then all the atheists can vote for him/her and set the record straight - are there more atheists (who care enough to vote) than Christians, than Catholics, than Buddhists, than pagans, etc.
If there are enough atheists who are willing to put their money where their mouth is and vote, you guys will have a leader of your own to brag about.
That's supposed to be the American way, isn't it? - By . Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @02:32pm:"I've never met anyone who truly believes there is a God."
You need to get out more, Indigo Kid; that may be the most ridiculous statement I've ever read here. Of course, it makes you feel better if you think everyone on the other side of the fence is faking it, and "feeling better" seems to be the point to just about everything today, don't you agree? I mean, that's what really matters - not whether there IS or IS NOT a God, but how you feel. If there IS a God and you're denying him, that makes you a bit uncomfortable, but if you think that all "smart" people also deny him, that takes the individual responsibility away and makes you more comfortable; if you can convince yourself that all those who believe in a creator are just faking it, so much the better.
On the flip side, if there IS NO God and I truly believe there is - well, so what? - By . Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @02:35pm:I thought this would be cheating but...

No current American politicians... - By . Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @03:36pm:From the Terms & Conditions:
5. It is recommended, but not required, that contestants provide information verifying the claim that any said elected office holder openly identifies as atheist, humanist, freethinker, or other nontheist descriptor. However, the SCA's judges have sole discretion in determining whether sufficient documentation exists to support claims that any particular office holder is a self-identified nontheist. - By . Comment posted 13-Oct-2006 @03:40pm:6. By submitting an entry, the contestant acknowledges the subjective nature of the various criteria being sought in this contest, and therefore all contestants implicitly agree that the SCA's judges shall have sole discretion in making the decision of which entry or entries identify the nontheist holding highest elected office. More specifically, the SCA's judges have sole discretion in determining whether each entry identifies an elected public office holder, whether the identified office holder is a nontheist, and whether the elected office of the office holder is higher or lower in status than that of other entries. The decision of the judges shall be final and not subject to further review.
Translation: we'll never have to pay out a stinkin' dime, because we deem that once anyone has been elected, they will therefore automatically think that they are now a god, and the entry is immediately disqualified. - By Go soak yer head!. Comment posted 14-Oct-2006 @07:46am:Indigo Kid

Perhaps the myth is true. You're just a kid in the wrong place. Pretty pompous statemente there son... assuming you have such a grip on human understanding. Perhaps you may consider thinking before opening the pie hole.
Either that or just another desperate atheist in search for the elusive attention! I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and believe on the second choice. - By . Comment posted 14-Oct-2006 @12:27pm:If the data in this link
http://www.adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html#Nonreligious
is close to correct then only about one half of one per cent of the people in the USA admit to being atheists. It would be tough to get elected dog catcher with that kind of a constituency.
If the Indigo guy is correct (and not just trolling) most of the other 99.5% are lying (to themselves and/or others -- or at least to Indigo). Maybe Indigo could get all these liars together and get them to come out of the no-god closet. - By CMP. Comment posted 16-Oct-2006 @07:24am:Wow! One percent eh??? And they must be all here in this blog! :)
