Faithful Still Wowed By Shroud
(with comments)
People really, really want to believe: Researcher says text proves Shroud of Turin real.
A Vatican researcher claims a nearly invisible text on the Shroud of Turin proves the authenticity of the artifact revered as Jesus' burial cloth.
The claim made in a new book by historian Barbara Frale drew immediate skepticism from some scientists, who maintain the shroud is a medieval forgery.
Frale, a researcher at the Vatican archives, said Friday that she used computers to enhance images of faintly written words in Greek, Latin and Aramaic scattered across the shroud.
She asserts the words include the name "Jesus Nazarene" in Greek, proving the text could not be of medieval origin because no Christian at the time, even a forger, would have labeled Jesus a Nazarene without referring to his divinity.
Even more compelling: If you look very close you see the small type, "All Rights Reserved."

- By Shel-tone. Comment posted 20-Nov-2009 @10:22am:How about they do like they used to do to people the thought were witches and burn it? If it's really Jesus shroud, surely it won't burn?
- By Doug. Comment posted 20-Nov-2009 @11:31am:The shroud has no provenance back past 1357 to Christ's time. This doesn't matter as God could have waved his hand at any time to create the shroud and even used fourteenth century pigments to throw in elements of doubt and faith. Even if it is a forgery then it was God's will and should be venerated as much as if it was Christ's actual shroud. Heads I win tails you lose.

Some P.T. Barnum quotes:
"There's a sucker born every minute”
"Without promotion something terrible happens... Nothing!”
Religianity & churchianity will say & do anything to fill the pews, and most importantly, fill those offering plates.
They "MUST" fill those offering plates, so they can be jet flying, limosine riding, stylin' & profilin' preachers of the shroud-man's word. The "truth" is just a tale told often enough...a lie told often enough becomes the truth! - By . Comment posted 20-Nov-2009 @05:23pm:I once worked for a Woman who claimed to be an Earth-bound Angel, put here to help mankind. We made jewelery.
She would send out weekly faxes to the 'News' media promoting her God blessed ,nee, ANGELIC behaviors , good works ,and business accumen. Some people bought into this and she was bestowed with many earthly rewards and fancy pieces of framed Paper.
PT was kinda right.Promotion can be Terrible sometimes. And suckers ARE born every minute
I wasn't there long. - By . Comment posted 20-Nov-2009 @06:06pm:Odd. I recently read an article conclusively proving that the shroud was a fake. Sorry, can't remember where.

No matter how many times you prove a thing, 20 percent of the population (or so) will believe the opposite.
