CompuServe RIP
(with comments)

I figured CompuServe was long gone. But no... CompuServe Requiem.

The original CompuServe service, first offered in 1979, was shut down by its current owner, AOL this past week. The service, which provided its users addresses such as 73402,3893, was the first major online service although the number of users has dwindled in recent years. At its height, the service boasted about having over half a million users simultaneously on line.

And one of them was me!

I used compuserve back around 1984 or so. It was a birthday gift I really wanted and got, to use with my Atari 800 computer. I was able to log on once, I started to download something, then realized that the connection was actually a long distance call that would end up costing more than the modem I just got, and I never used it again.

Compuserve was my first on-line provider, too. Used it with my Altair 8801b, CP/M, and a Cat 300baud acoustic modem.

I actually stayed with them until I migrated to Windoze. I also used both telenet (for work) and some ARPAnet through a buddy's log-on.

We had CompuServe back in what now seems like the Dark Ages.
Also, it was used on a limited basis where I worked.

I thought it was the greatest thing ever invented until I got those phone bills in the hundred of dollars. My husband at the time and I used it for show prep. After we realized how expensive those long distance charges were (in addition to per-minute charges for the service itself), I would get up at 4AM, connect, download all the stuff, hang up, and then print out reams of material to go through and see if there was anything worth using. That didn't last too long.

Wonder what Compuserve looked like in recent years? I never dreamed it was still around.

I think I joined in 1987. I had the e-mail address going until about 2001. Then, I realized that the e-mail address wasn't getting anything but spam, because everyone who had used that address to contact me now had one of my newer addresses. The numeric address was too awkward for most people to handle, although I seem to recall that CIS allowed you to create a text alias.

I, too, am amazed to learn that it was still going until last week.

The CompuServe forums really were cool, though. way better than GEnie's Roundtables.

As long as we're going back in time....
How many of you wasted countless hours on "Adventure"?

I'm sad to see it's finally gone, though I too thought it was already a thing of the past. They were based up on Henderson Rd here in Columbus, OH, for most of their existence. I was never a member, but think of them every time I go to Cuco's Taqueria or City Bbq...
