A $7,328 Tip
(with comments)
I saw this at Cynical-C Blog: A Billionaire's Restaurant Check.
The wine accounts for $35,000. By comparison, that $12.00 water seems dirt cheap.

- By Daniel FR, Germany. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @06:52pm:$ 39 for a dish of spaghetti doesn't seem a bargain.
- By Blind Dog Jones. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @07:13pm:The only word that comes to my mind is "obscene".
- By Rix. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @07:20pm:I wonder how many people got to split that $7,300 tip? Not bad for a night's work.
- By Dean Booth. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @07:21pm:Good word choice, Blind Dog Jones.
- By Dar. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @07:51pm:Well, depending on the year of the wine, they might have gotten charged a little too much.
However, if you are an X-Pensive Wino, then it's right in line. - By Curtis. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @08:19pm:I like the item "2 Parmesan Chunks." Tony musta paid, Paulie Walnuts woulda balked.
- By George in Columbus, OH. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @08:32pm:Actually, the tip was $12,328. The $7,328 was the mandatory tip, but he threw in an extra $5,000 according to another article I read. Crazy, huh?
- By wally the duck. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @08:35pm:What you don't see, of course, is whether any of this stuff went home in a doggie bag. It's obscene for one meal, but it might really have been good for a couple of meals.
- By Dog. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @08:36pm:According to one comment, the restaurant sucks.

- By Chris Weagel. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @09:25pm:All that and no bar-b-que sauce?
- By Blind Dog Jones. Comment posted 02-Nov-2009 @11:31pm:Were the profits the restaurant made on this meal obscene, or was it only the meal's expense?
No, not the restaurants profit or the meals expense. Just that people would indulge themselves to that extreme extent. - By . Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @12:36am:I don't think the food prices are particularly outrageous for a snazzy restaurant and a 20% gratuity is pretty standard in the nice places; the only real issue here is the $35,000 worth of wine - and that, I have to agree, is disturbing in many ways, but not particularly shocking when you consider the way the ultra-rich spend money. Of course, that's nothing new, either.
But oh, my - that tip made some people very, very happy, so at least some good was spread around for $35,000 worth of wine. - By . Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @12:39am:Petrus and Romanée-Conti are the most expensive wines you can buy... but certainely not the best choice to suit italian food... What can you expect from people like theese ...
- By eyeno. Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @05:25am:$75 for a shot of Johnny Walker Blue Scotch doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

- By cesar. Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @06:56am:My highest check paid ever was $180 for my family.
- By Gary. Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @07:04am:If my math is correct, wouldn't a billionaire paying $47,000 for a meal be the same as a millionaire paying $47? Or, a $100k-aire eating at McDonalds?
- By JohnM. Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @07:19am:Gary's right - the guy was just slum-dogging.
- By mmmark. Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @09:53am:If you take off the alcohol, the meal was not outrageously priced. Very expensive, yes. But for six people a $1000 dinner in NY is not unusual at a very good restaurant. He just went a little overboard on the vino.
I had Johnny Walker Blue once at a restaurant and the price was the same. $75 a glass. - By . Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @10:36am:I've been saving up for a glass of Johnnie Blue since 2002.
- By Minderbinder. Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @11:35am:That's it, baby, when you've got it, flaunt it, flaunt it!

Gary's right; if my calculating is too, then he could eat 20,000 meals at that price! That's once a day for the next 50 years. And who knows how much it was worth to him business-wise? - By Christopher. Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @02:38pm:and yet they split ONE Tiramisu !
Cheap Bas%^&d ! - By Guy. Comment posted 03-Nov-2009 @06:13pm:I tried the Johnny Gold - I'd rather have the Black, not impressed enough to spring for Blue. Gimme the 18 yr. old Chivas and I'm happy...
