Stones At eMusic
Just added to eMusic: 23 albums by The Rolling Stones.
Ladies and gentlemen, may we present the entire Rolling Stones ABKCO catalogue: 25 titles covering "Satisfaction," "Paint It, Black" (possessor of the most famous comma in music history), "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and so many other stellar singles. There are classic albums, as well: Let It Bleed, Beggars Banquet, Aftermath and on and on. In terms of rock & roll, there is little better. Below is our guide to this amazing haul, with picks both famous and forgotten to shine a light for fans and newcomers alike. It's a gas gas gas!
Finally, I can re-acquire Their Satanic Majesties Request -- although it won't be the same without that 3D cover image.

Here's what I got from eMusic this month:
En Route - Four80East
Electronica jazz. One of my better finds on eMusic. We'll Die In The Pig Pen Fighting - Tom, Brad & Alice
That's Tom Sauber on banjo, and Brad Leftwich on fiddle. Excellent old-time music.- Boombox Squaredance - Foghorn Stringband
Kind of bluegrassy at times, but still one of my favorite stringbands. - Substrata - Biosphere
Ambient go-to-sleep music - Modern Times - Pearl Django
Suggested by concertinist. Django-style music that sounds great.

Cheney’s Toy
If you're an eMusic member, here's a free track by James McMurtry: Cheney's Toy.
Read the lyrics here (PDF). Here's one member's review:
Hey! When did emusic become a political blog? I keep running into angry demorats bashing Bush and frothing at the mouth! Hey! News flash-Bush will be gone in a few months, and Hillary, Obama, or McStain can usher in your new utopia of joy! Oh wait, Clinton didn't save the world the last 8 years he was in office, but this time will be different! ACK! Go bash Rush Limbah and let the rest of us review music instead of your ignorant political views! Sheeze! By the way, if you hate bush, chuck out the Ministry albums. Lots of anti-bush propaganda there!

Here's what I got from eMusic yesterday:
-
Soon One Morning - Black Twig Pickers
I really like these guys. It's my second album by this group, and now I have them all. It's old-timey music. - John Dee Holeman & The Waifs Band
An old blues guy. Very reminiscent of Lightnin' Hopkins. - Echoes of Egypt - Diane Arkenstone
New agey background music for reading. - Cello Blue - David Darling
My favorite cello player. Beautiful, quite melodies. Seeing this album reminded me of an old Narada CD that he recorded with Michael Jones -- which I no longer have. It's not on eMusic but it is on Amazon. I'll get it. - Quaker Girl - Tony Ellis
Most banjo tunes. - Legendary Texas Fiddler - Benny Thomasson
I downloaded 5-6 tracks to fill out my quote.

eMusic Picks
Here's what I downloaded from eMusic today:
-
Ship in the Clouds - Andy Cahand et al.
Really fine old-time music. Even Banjo Brad would approve. - The Time in Between - David Feder
Easy-listening guitar, nice for background music while reading. - Play it For A Long Time - New Roanoke Jug Band
They plays songs originally recorded by the Roanoake Jug Band. - No Never Alone - Justin Rutledge And The Junction Forty
I just got one song from this album -- a song that's unlike the others. It's a really interesting arrangement of Year of Jubilo (which they call Year of Jericho). - It's A Beautiful Day - It's A Beautiful Day
It's been on my Save For Later list since 2005, and I finally got it. - The Stardust Session - John Coltrane
Because I had only four other Coltrane albums. This is a good one that was released when I was six years old.

World's On Fire - The Crooked Jades
This has been on my "save for later" list forever, and I finally snagged it. Old-time music with modern touches. - Clawhammer Banjo - David Johnson
Just banjo. Nothin' but banjo. - Key Principles - Nathan
A Canadian folk/country group, with some tasty female vocals. - Sacred Mantras - Caitlin
I ran out of Deva Premal albums, so I got this one. OK, but it's certainly not Deva. - Sleep - Midori / Keith Banfield
Two long tracks, suitable for sleeping or reading. - The Cure For Bad Deeds - Martina Sorbara
Another Canadian vocalist.
And my normal blurb: Not an eMusic member? You're missing out on the best deal going. iTunes gets all of the publicity, but eMusic is vastly superior for music lovers.

Here's what I got from eMusic this month:
-
Letters from Sinners & Strangers - Eilen Jewell
Phillip Cairns will like this. - Shine - Joni Mitchell
Her latest. Not her best, but still very good. - Memory Almost Full - Paul McCartney
So-so. Maybe it will grow on me. - Rattlesnake Tidal Wave - Foghorn Stringband
One of my favorite old-time music groups. - Moola Mantra - Deva Premal
I can't get enough of Deva. This is the perfect background music for reading. - Two tracks by Iris Dement, on The Best of Mountain Stage Live Vol. 6, and Folk Live from Mountain Stage
I want to own everything Iris has ever recorded.
And I still have three tracks left for oddball stuff that may appear throughout the month.
All of this music for $11.99. If I got them from iTunes, they would have cost $61.38 (assuming $.99 per track -- and assuming I could even find them). And the iTunes tracks would have all kinds of restrictions.

Shine At eMusic
Joni Mitchell's new CD is available today, and you can get it at eMusic:
If you're not an eMusic member, click here for a free 25-song trial.
You can also get the latest Paul McCartney album, and still have two songs left over. Then, you can quit if you like. But you'll probably want to stick around. eMusic is the best thing going.
My monthly downloads kick in tomorrow, so I'll have to wait a day.

If you're an eMusic member, you'll probably want to pass this one by: Whooshes, Swipes, Swooshes and Fly-In Sound Effects.
The album has 42 tracks, with a total time of 2 minutes, 41 seconds. Unfortunately, sample clips aren't available for this item.

Here's what I got from eMusic this month:
-
Mother Tongue - Janubia
The one where she sings in a made-up language. Or maybe it's just nonsense syllables. - Bushwalk - Michael Antcliff
Good background music for reading - Distillation - Erin McKeown
My second album by her - Simple Things - Zero 7
Relaxing dinda electronic music - R n R - Rick Braun & Richard Elliot
I got this for Pamn. She really likes these guys, and it was available on eMusic before it was actually released. - Radiant - Steve Oliver
Another one for Pamn. He's a "buoyant" smooth jazz guitarist.
Yes, a month with no old-time or banjo music!
